Essays by Gill Smith
Gill Smith is a refreshing antidote to
British "stiff upper lip" conditioning and a brilliant exponent of what she
calls "excruciating embodiment". I worked with her for several years, helping her
awaken into nonseparate awareness and beyond. She's a remarkably deep, honest,
and self-revealing woman who has been invited by life to investigate some
incredibly dark material. What makes Gill different is that she actually accepted the invitation and took her inquiry into some of the darkest
reaches of human experience. Her deeply awakened capacity to integrate her own
darkness (and the darkness of the world) with ordinary human life is an
extraordinary gift for all people struggling with the everyday realities of
fear, pain, trauma, and insanity. Her writings dispel our conditioned beliefs
that life should be good and happy, and thereby relieves us of the unnecessary
pain of wondering why our lives don't match the absurdly upbeat pictures society
(especially spiritual society) tends to present. If you are harboring
unrealistic expectations about self, others, life, or saviors, be prepared to
have said expectations demolished. Warning: You might want to have
a sip of vodka before reading.
